Narrative/Profile:
The Birth-to-Five Head Start Program offers free G.E.D. classes to
the community. Students may attend classes at 3 different times at
2 different locations. Morning classes are held at the Family Services
Center located at 1225 Agnes St; classes are from 8a.m until 12 noon,
Monday through Friday. Evening classes are from 1p.m. - 5p.m. Monday
through Thursday.
We offer night classes on Tuesday and Thursday, from 6p.m - 8p.m at
the Lulac Hacienda Apartments, located at 2625 Greenwood.
Number of Staff:
Mr. Brown is the instructor for both day and night classes. Small
group studying makes it possible for the instructor to accommodates
all the students.
Purpose/Expectations:
It is our purpose to offer quality instruction to everyone who wants
to complete their initial education. Students are expected to attend
classes on a regular basis, take and pass the official G.E.D. test
at Del-Mar College, and participate in our graduation ceremony.
It is our aim to adhere to our mission statement, promise, and pledge
at all times.
Assessment Tools:
We want to assure each student is ready for the official test before
they make the trip to Del-Mar. The Agency has purchased the Official
GED Practice Test for use in the classroom. New and updated material
assures that the students are receiving the best training possible.
Our best assessment tool has been the student standing in the graduation
line. Our ceremonies have averaged 30 graduating students receiving
their GED.
Special Activities:
The Adult Literacy instructor also facilitates our fatherhood program,
F.A.I. T. H. (Fathers Actively Involved Through Head Start) focuses
on getting the father figure more involved in the education of the
young children through training, activities, and meetings.
Mr. Brown also works with the citywide effort to slow the high dropout
rate that we face.
MOU’s:
The adult literacy area has Memorandums of Understanding with:
- The Texas Workforce Network
- The Adult Learning Center
- Lulac Hacienda Apartments- provides classroom space at no charge
for night classes.
Communication/Technology:
Identifying the community need and making the community aware of
our program takes lots of effort. The Head Start Centers display
posters. The Education Service Center runs a free ad in the local
newspaper. We have our ad posted all around the city, even at local
shelters. We even have referrals from the truancy judges and probation
officers.
