Poseidon is sometimes considered the middle brother, although it is difficult to tell, except that Zeus is in fact the youngest. After drawing lots with his two brothers (Zeus and Hades), Poseidon received the kingdom of the sea. His wisdom was sought by all sea-faring men, and his wrath was feared by all.

One of the most famous of all Greek myths, The Odyssee is an account of one man's suffering because of his arrogance. Odysseus failed to honor Poseidon for their safe passage to Troy and suffered the consequences by not being able to return home for two decades.

The symbols most associated with Poseidon are the horse and the bull. His patron city was said to be at Attica, although he wanted Athens at first, but lost to Athena in a contest.
